A Surface Mounted Device or SMD for short is an electronic component that is mounted directly on to the surface of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). This method of mounting components replaced 'through-hole technology', which itself replaced 'point-to-point construction'.

SMD components are widely used by electronics engineers in the design and manufacturing of PCBs. SMDs include such components as capacitors, resistors, oscillators and transistors.
